Beginnings in South Africa
Born in South Africa, Karendra Devroop began his musical journey at an early age, quickly developing an exceptional affinity for the saxophone that would come to define his artistic identity. His formative years were shaped by deep engagement with a wide range of musical traditions — from jazz to classical repertoire to the rich and layered musical heritage of South Africa.
Even as a young musician, the breadth of his musical interests set him apart. He gravitated toward the saxophone’s unique voice — its ability to move between tenderness and intensity, between the singing line of a ballad and the rhythmic drive of up-tempo playing — and made it his life’s work to master that range in full.
